On the afternoon of Friday, March 28, 2014, the World Language and ESL teachers of Linden High School, Soehl Middle School, and McManus Middle School had the opportunity to participate in a discussion and lecture by Dr. Mary Curran, Associate Dean of Local-Global Partnerships at the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University. Dr. Curran has published articles in journals such as TESOL Quarterly, Learning Languages, and The Journal of Teacher Education. She is committed to anti-oppressive teacher education, partnerships both in the local community and around the world, and preparing language education teachers (and all teachers) to be advocates.

ESL and WL teachers in the LHS Media Center learn more about language acquisition theory and practice.

The workshop session focused on recent research in the field of second language acquisition, with a focus on how we might best use this knowledge to improve student outcomes.

Teachers were offered advice and recommendations for how to do even more in terms of their projects and activities so that they would better improve student performance. After an initial discussion on the nature of theories, including the theory that teachers not only teach they way they were taught, but also in the  way that they themselves prefer to learn. Topics ranging from Narrative Theory to Collaborative Dialogues to Translingual Practices and Global Competencies were addressed.
